Laura Poitras is a filmmaker, journalist, and artist. CITIZENFOUR, her third in a trilogy of films about post-9/11 America, won an Oscar for Best Documentary, as well as awards from BAFTA, Independent Spirit Awards, and the Director’s Guild of America. Part one of the trilogy, My Country, My Country, about the occupation of Iraq, was nominated for an Academy Award. Part two, The Oath, on Guantánamo Bay Prison, was nominated for two Emmy awards. In 2006, the U.S. government placed her on a watchlist. In January 2013, she received the first encrypted email from Edward Snowden, who used the alias, “CITIZENFOUR.” In June she traveled to Hong Kong with Glenn Greenwald, and her video of Edward Snowden revealing his identity was broadcast worldwide. Her reporting on NSA mass surveillance received the George Polk Award, and shared in the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for public service. 

Laura is the recipient of a 2012 MacArthur Fellowship. She is currently working on a series of immersive installations for her first solo museum exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
