SIDToday - SINID Summer 2003 Series of Strategic Intelligence Issue Seminars Begins with Tough Times
Summer EDGE. "Tou Times for Turkey" will he presented by the Deputy SINID for
Europe, on Thursday, 12 June from 10:30 to 12:30 in Room
234113-5. Advance registration is required; click HERE, for instructions.
Course Overview:
The fallout from the Iraqi campaign has been largely negative for Turkey, and
the full impact of this verv hitter episode in U.S.- Turkish relations is still unknown.
The pro-Islamjustice and Development Partv and the Turkish General Staff
guardian of Turkey's secular democracv, view each other with mutual
suspicion. The strategic relationship with the LIE. is seriously weakened, so the
LIE. is unlikely to champion Turkev's cause in Europe or with the IMFfWorld Bank
as ferventlv. In addition, Turkev's regional influence, particularly in northern Iraq,
has been significantly diminished. The presentation will examine the impact that
major differences in expectations, perceptions, threat definition, decisionmakinq,
and communication had on the strategic relationship and assess the likely
long-term impact.
Please consult the SINID Wehsite {"qo sinio") for information on future
events in this series.
